My Sister's Keeper
(Jodi Picoult)
Ever since she can remember, Anna Fitzgerald has been compromising her health to save her sister's life, again and again. She was, in fact, handpicked by doctors from a selection of embryos, for this very purpose. This is a powerful and thought provoking tale of a young girl suing her parents for the rights to her own organs. It's not that she doesn't love her sister, who is dying of leukaemia - she's given her blood cells, stem cells, bone marrow - she just wants the choice to help her to be her own. Jodi Picoult's skillful portrait of a family in crisis is given extra weight by the tough moral choices her characters face. Shifting between different time periods in Anna's life, and from mother to father to sister to lawyer, she manages to convey the very difficult positions they find themselves in. The mother emotionally torn between her children. The father, a fireman who rescues lives every day, but doesn't know how to rescue his daughter. The reader can't help but sympathise with every viewpoint. And meanwhile we find light relief in the mysterious relationship between Anna's attorney and his dog. As well as tugging on the heartstrings, My Sister's Keeper provides fodder for thought on a challenging topic. The final few pages are jaw dropping, but Picoult's writing is open minded enough to leave the reader pondering the real issues behind the story for days after.
