Simple Story
(?"? ?????)
A Simple story is a story of an unrealized love, between Herschel and Blooma. A love captured by the conventions of the little town of Shabosh (derived from the Hebrew word "Shibush", which means disruption). The simple story is not simple at all, for the obstacles in Herscel's love to Blooma are great. First of all, there's Zirl, herschel's mother, which schemes to marry him to Mina, a wealthy maiden. Zirl, that grasps marriage as a business transaction, does not rebuke Herschel for his love ; On the contrary, she thinks: let him be entertained in courting this poor girl, but when it gets to marriage - it has nothing to do with the heart. Secondly it is the environment, strictly guarding the social hierarchy, as Shabosh is a town in which the distinguishing between the poor and the wealthy is very sharp. These two stumbling-blocks are embodied in the character of Yona Toiber, the matchmaker, which already starts to embroider Herschel's wedding. Only Baruch Meir, Herschel's father, understands his son's feelings, as he himself paid a price in his days, only to obtain money and position. But even he is dazed of the money he's about to achieve if Herschel marries Mina. The capital plays the role of Erotics in the lives of Zirl and Baruch Meir, Herschel's parents. The moment of intimacy occur when the spouses lock their shop and count the revenue. They pile the bills and the coins in separate stacks. They have no place in their harts for cultivation or love declarations and they live in this manner with a whole heart. The third obstacle which Herschel faces, is Blooma (He's love ) herself. He even notes that her name is "Blooma" (which means sealed in Hebrew) because she stops herself from loving him back. The young, naive, inexperienced, economic reliant upon his parents Herschel, fails to resist the conspiracy and is being brought to the marriage. He has left only one way to escape, the same way chosen years ago by his uncle. He enjoys himself thinking over and over of this rescue and in the end he chooses it: The way of madness, of insanity. But even here, he's not strong enough. Herschel is sent to mental treatment by Dr. Langzam. He returns to the town, to the people that interpret his insanity as impersonation. They think that Herschel tried to avoid induction to the military service. So Herschel is back in his town with his wife and family, but even when he and Mina look at their second son and seem to be contented, he remembers Blooma. "Love is not to be divided and aimed at two people" he thinks to himself and Mina his wife explains this thought referred to their children. Only the narrator adds the ironic remark which accompanies the whole novel: "only God in heaven knows what Herschel meant".
