Ask The Dust
(John Fante)
Arturo Bandini asked the dust why it's a constant presence in his hexistence and it's even a faithful compaign. He asks the dust why it makes as a camarade in the dirty hotel rooms in which he's trying to become a writer, in which he waits answering letters from his editor. he ask the dust why it's on his side in the bar where he meets and falls in love with camilla Lopez, a marvellous mexicans origin waitress. Bandini doesn't stop during the whole story to questin the dust, because it rappresents the metaphor of his troubled life, of his problems, of his worries and of everything runs to his failing. He can only walk blind between hopes, even if he's only twenty, and only in Camilla can find inspiration for going on. The relatiotion will live between alternantig moods, extreem joy, betrays and lies, till blowing in a sort of sublimation of idealization. Also at the end he will ask the dust: when Camilla, at least one of his ghosts, and crazy he will wander in the desert till disappear. He will follow her first by walk then by his reversable car, holding in his hand his first novel. Only time after, when he will realize that it has passed too much time to have hope to find her alive, he will come back to Los angeles... when even the dust won't be able to give him an answer.
