Who Moved My Cheese: Review
(Srimayee Chatopadhyay)
Review of book- who moved my cheese by Dr. JOHN SPENCER. About the book: The book ?Who Moved My Cheese? deals with change in lives of men and women in their work in large scale or small scale industries. It includes an amusing and enlightening story of 4 characters who lived in a maze and look for cheese to nourish them and keep them happy. Here cheese is being used as a metaphor...which indicates?what u desire in life. It could be job, a loving relationship, money or health or peace of mind. And Maze is the place where u looked for what u want. That could be your organization, home, or the community where u live in. CONTENT OF THE BOOK: The story has 3 parts THE GATHERING, The STORY OF WHO MOVED MY CHEESE? & DISCUSSION. The first part? ?THE GATHERING? includes A brief discussion amongst former classmates who talk at a class reunion about trying to deal with changes they have faced in so many years after college. The classmates are Angela, Nathan, Carlos, Jessica and Michael. It was Michael who?s life changed tremendously after reading the book and he narrates the story to the other batch mates. The second part ?WHO MOVED MY CHEESE?? includes the main core of the story. The third section is ?DISCUSSION? where the class mates discuss what they have learnt from the story and how they are going to use the tips in their work and their lives. The 3rd part included the ?DISCUSSION? This is the best part of the book where everyone tries and puts the meanings of dealing with change in real life as per the book. After Michael narrated the story to all the batch mates each one of them tries to compare his/her situation and judges them on the basis of what they learnt from the story. My point of view about the book: The book has been written in a very simple language and the story is very clear. It is a simple parable that reveals truths of real life. I have drawn the following conclusion form the book- 1: One must not reply completely on destiny as Hem & Haw did initially. As according to me destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice, it is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved. 2: Happiness, like unhappiness, is a proactive choice that means one can choose his own path to lead oneself towards happiness. Only on the basis of what you r doing in order to reach your goal can you decide whether you will attain contentment. 3: It is not what others do or even our own mistakes that hurt us the most; it is our response to those things. So one must not derive conclusions before testing the situation well as our response to any mistake affects the quality of the next moment 4: Before making decision final one must not forget to analyze it as Long-range planning does not deal with future decisions, but with the future of present decisions made while keeping in mind about the future. 5: Lastly it is correctly said that ?PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE? and Good actions get good results in time. So one must not make hast to receive their results but work with dedication, determination and strong desire to achieve ones set goals. CONCLUSION: From the story I derived the conclusion that every right implies a responsibility; every opportunity, an obligation & every possession, a duty. So it s our RESPONSIBILITY & OBLIGATION TO SERVE OUR DUTY WELL BY STAYING ALERT, CALM and by NOT JUDGING OUR SITUATIONS SUPERFICALLY. The hardest victory is the victory over self. So in order to attain complete success one must never mix EMOTIONS while WORKING, as emotional entanglement causes barriers in achieving goals. It is very well said by SOCRATES that ?The unexamined life is not worth living? hence one should always explore all horizons and all possible alternatives in order to be successful and reach their CHEESE STATION ?N?. I would like to end by saying that ?The ONLY thing that is CONSTANT IN LIFE, IS CHANGE.? Inorder to be successful in any aspect of life one must accept change & adapt according to situations.
