Journal
(Anna GRIGORIEVNA DOSTOÏEVSKAÏA)
This Newspaper was not to be intended for the public. Its writer had used a complicated shorthand which made a nonreadable document of it. Second wife of Dostoïevski - 26 years its junior - Anna, all bride, undertakes her newspaper at the time of the stay of the couple in Geneva, of the summer at the winter 1867. The writer returns by far: death sentence (cancelled in extremis by the Tsar), bagne, writing of Crime and punishment, the player, feverish frequentation of the casinos. In Switzerland, it composes the Idiot. Deciphered against the will of its author who by no means intended it for the reading, this text is attaching to many regards. The tone simple, sincere and selected lets foresee Dostoïevski inhabited by its demons, the play, being on the point of "bridging" the least economy... Anna is lucid without overpowering. Its attachment, its confidence are very strong. This Newspaper, one will retain the extremely modest conditions of the couple. A pastry making, tea are little marvels which come a little to soften the rigour of the days. In this stripped life, to write, read are essential, vital activities. The reading of the Newspaper of the wife causes, confirms the respect for the man. Low hat: poverty so present, without counting the disease, the fight to reduce it and in the center of all that: a writer. Preface of Paul Kalinine, Traduction of Russian by J-c Lanne, Stock/Femmes in their time, 1978.
