D.H. Laurence (1885-1930) was one of five children and was the son of a coal miner and ex school teacher ... he won a scholarship to Nottingham University to study for a teacher's certificate. Il-health forced him out of teaching in 1910.
He wrote Women in Love in 1916, immediately after The Rainbow (1915) The Rainbow received bad reviews and was withdrawn and copies were destroyed by the police. Women in Love was published in the United States of America in 1920 and in 1921 in Britain. D.H. Laurence outraged the conventional society of his age!

Laurence's private life was equally tempestuous and he eloped with Frieda who was the wife of his Professor at Nottingham; Frieda was 6 years his senior and the mother of 3 children. The marriage was stormy and the couple moved from one place to another .. . Victorian Society ... was very strict in terms of morals and social behaviour and particularly sexual behaviour was totally conventional in those days. Thus the outrage of D.H. Laurence's writings.
