The History Of Tom Jones
(Henry Fielding)

Publicidade
Tom Jones is a panoramic novel in which author presents 18th century English society. The action takes place in Somersetshire ( the country), the road ( Upton Inn) and in London. Mr Allworthy finds a baby in his bed one night. He decides to raise the child with Blifil who is his nephew and heir. Blifil is presented as a contrast to Tom. Tom is sincere, good-hearted man that despise falsity and hypocrisy, whereas Blifil pretends to be an exemplary man but in fact his deeds are pervert and immoral. Tom has a number of adventures and doesn't always act in a proper way, meaning his numerous affairs with women, but he is a positive character. The ending of the story is suprising, it turns out that Tom is the son of Mr Allworthy's sister Bridget. All the characters involved in the story have different traits and there are many comic situations based on mistaken identity. Therefore, the plot is really complex. It is also interesting that the author compares the novel to a feast and the opening of chapters of each book to a menu. What is more, the novel makes the reader consider a timeless problem - marriage for love and marriage for money.
