Doctor shivago is a novel written in the background of Russian revolution. Analyzing and living revolution through yuri shivagos life is said to be included more or less with autobiographical details of author ..yuri is the only son of the famous millionaire industrialist shivago .but his father left his wife and son and went to Moscow to marry again .yuris mothr died by consumption when he was a child and he was left in the care of uncle kolya.[.nikolay nikolevich] who was an unfrocked priest and a free thinker and author.[yuri is also called yura,yurochkaetc]his mamma died in 1901 and just after that his father committed suicide.he was driven to insanity by his lawyer Komorovsky by making him a drunkard and bankrupt.he jumbed down from a running train and yuras to be friend misha Gordon saw this incident who is also in he same train. after sometime yura was put with Gromenkos family in Moscow where he got good education..tonya the daughter of that family was of same age and misha Gordon also came every day.
This time we are introduced to Larissa or lara who was also a student. .Her father died and she came to Moscow with mother brother under THE GUARDIANSHIP OF KOMOROVSKY..he sexually exploited Lara and she STRUGGLED to go away from him.she worked as a governess,she tried to shoot him,she stayed alone and until last breath this evil person influenced her negatively.there was pavel antipov,pasha, a childhood friend there and mysteriously they became attached.which lead to their marriage later.it was full devotion and submission,love and intimacy from both sides
THEN comes the various stages of peoples revolution and atrocities of war.pasha and lara passedtheir exams and offered jobs in the sme town in the urals;they left Moscow.yura completed his medicinal studies became dr shivago,married tonya and had a son sasha.tonyas mother anna wanted them to marry.she loved yury as own son and shared her childhood memories with him.he also helped her to die peacefully and without fearing death.
Antipovs settled in yuratin.they had a daughter katya .pasha studied again and again and teaching himself at home got university degrees in physics and mathematics.they worked as school teachers loved each other but some vaccum gradually came over there.as an answer to his uneasiness pasha antipov volunteered to join army.
Lara kept her daughter in Moscow with a friend and joined army as a nurse to get a chance to see her husband
Meanwhile dr shivago is compelled to join army.he was attached to divisional hospital.yury was knocke off by an explosion and hit by a bomb splinter.there in melyuzeyevo lara and yury met as nurse and patient then nurse and doctor. And it was the beginning of a special intimacy which will go away beyond their death
.meanwhile revolution was facing many many hurdles .it was a bloody period all over Russia.it brought out a great change in favour of poor farmers and workers but not without atrocities .whites ,reds, partisans ,Mensheviks Bolsheviks ?..groups were struggling and killing each other no body was safe .everyone suspected others, life was hell.everyday life was interrupted.families disjointed.criminals also joined many groups.life in Moscow also became unbearable .there was nothing left to eat so dr shivago,tonya her dad and son wanted to go away from Moscow to her mothers homeland.they plan to go to Varynko,tonyas grandfathers place kruger estste.milkutsin an old manager is there and they leave Moscow.
The train journey to Varynko itself is a noticeable incident..it?s a symbol of the life of revolutionary Russia .they reached varynko and some how got a place to live.they built a hut,grew potatoes cabbages and vegetables and yuri again began to write.he is a poet in beginning of his career and fame.yury met lara again there and a warm and intimate relationship grew between them.pasha was wounded and supposed to be killed but there is also a rumour that he cameback in another name?.major strelnikov who is an infamous cruel red leader.
Meanwhile tonya became pregnant and yury was abducted by a forest group to serve as a doctor with them. after some years he escapes came to varynko but nobody is there,he met pasha laras husband there and that scene is the greatest emotional potrayal ever written.lara was sent back to Moscow as she was under death threat.
Tonya and family was deported to paris and yury was left alone in Moscow,he marries again but was lonely.
Boris Pasternak has formed his own philosophy in this great novel.he says life itself is growing,changing and developing.its lke a tree growing ..there is a life force forming and guiding the culture and everyday life of a place or country.a kind of spiritual map of the place. the language of soil,earth and simple people is same.
