WHY DOES EVIL EXIST?

Let me share with you a true story. You can relate to this as a college student. A professor was trying to challenge the religious faith of his class of university students. So he said, `Did God create everything that exists?= `Of course,@ answered the students. `Does evil exist?= asked the professor. `We see it everyday.= `Then God created evil,= said the professor triumphantly. `And if we are the results of what we do, if God created evil then God is evil. That is why I see no room for religious faith.= The professor smiled as he realized how he was testing the faith of his students.

One student raised his hand in the back. `Excuse me, professor. Does cold exist?= `Of course,= replied the professor. `Wrong,= said the student. `Cold is just the absence of heat. Objects give off heat when the molecules move. The less the molecules move about, the less heat. If they stopped all movement, that would be absolute zero, absolute cold. Cold is a word we invented for the absence of heat.= The student continued, `Does darkness exist?= `Of course,= replied the professor. `Wrong,= said the student. >Darkness is just the absence of light. Light is electromagnetic radiation, and white light can be broken up into all kinds of wavelengths. But if there is no radiation, it is dark. Darkness is a word we invented for the absence of light.

Finally the student asked, `Does evil exist?= Now the professor was less sure. `Certainly we see evil in the world.= `Evil is like cold and darkness. It is a word we invented for the absence of goodness in the world. Evil does not exist on its own. It is there because something else is lacking. Just as we can bring heat and bring light into the world, so we can bring goodness into the world.= The professor was stunned into silence. The name of the student in this true story - Albert Einstein.

You humans have been struggling with the problem of evil since you wrote the book of Job several millennia ago. The answer is before your eyes. Evil is simply the absence of good. Evil exists somewhere in the world because nobody has yet brought goodness to that place. Your job is to fill the world with goodness and chase away the evil.

So many religious people wait for me, for God, to solve the problems. Tell me, did I build that levee in New Orleans and not make it strong enough to withstand a hurricane. You humans built it. When you complain of evil, you have it wrong. Why do you think I created human beings? I created human beings to remove the evil from the world. That is your job.
