The Picador Book Of Sportswriting
(nick coleman and nick horby)
This just goes to show that sports fans are not morons. They/We enjoy a good tale as well as the next man. A good sport story goes beyond the result or the final score. This book emphasises my premise. It is a collection of memories and anecdotes skillfuly bound together under different sub sectional headings. It has a story for the followers of all sports. There is setting of the scene ,a plot ,a middle and an end. It is a must for all true sport fans . My own personal favourite is ' Golf Caddies ' by George Plimpton. Plimpton goes to the men who carry the bags. He asks the questions but there is a unwritten loyalty here. The caddies take their job very serious and will not undermine their chances of being retained by their employer for the next big tournament or the next season or for that matter in certain instances next week. I found this 1996 rendition a compulsive read and hopefully throws out the challenge for another more up to date version. I enjoy my sports and reporting that keeps me focused with an insight that these contributors unquestionably have in abundance. You may not wish to read every report but even if you home in on your own favourite sport or sports your enjoyment , pleasure and entertainment is guaranteed.
