The Picture Of Dorian Gray

Dorian Gray is an exceptionally beautiful young man on the verge of social career. For the first time we can see him in atelier of his much older friend Basil who is delighted with Dorian's looks and paints his picture. After the work is finshed, it turns out that it is the best Basil's work. The picture is the dearest to his heart and the painter doesn't want to be parted from it. However, Dorian insists on getting it and eventually he takes the picture. He also wishes to remain as beautiful as it was painted. Instead the picture is expected to 'take responsibility' for all Dorian's life and deeds: to age, to become wrinkled and contorted. In the atelier Dorian gets to know Lord Henry. He is fascinated by him because Lord Henry represents all the sins which he was afraid to commit. He influences Dorian to take advantage of all the aspects of life and eventually Dorian is convinced to do so. He starts to lead riotous and self-centered life which is full of violence and eroticism. Neighter he is shocked by young actress's suicide, his first love, nor the clear changes appearing in the picture. Dorian is even willing to kill his friend, when he comes to see his work and discover terrifying truth. Despite of passing of the time, Dorian's face remains unchanged. Finally, Dorian decides to destroy the portrait which shows ugliness of his soul. When he stabs knife in the canvas he drops dead. The next day somebody finds withered body of old man next to the portrait of beautiful young man.
