Sworn For Mackinaw
(James Spurr)
Sworn for Mackinaw is a sweeping adventure made all the more exciting because it is based on documented fact. The first in a planned series of books taking the reader through the War of 1812 between the United States and Britain, it begins with the prewar climate of Detroit on the Great Lakes and two men joining together in a business venture. Related by marriage, drawn together by friendship, the two begin building a 'tall ship', the Sloop Friends Good Will. They have no more ambition than to have a fast sailing ship to deliver cargo with, but quickly find themselves becoming more and more entangled with the anti-British sentiment sweeping the United States. William Lee, the captain, is pro-war and cites numerous incidents where British fleets have bullied and attacked those of the U.S.. Oliver Williams, the ship's owner, is doggedly against war and prays that the growing disagreement between the two countries can be settled peacefully. He's a businessman first and foremost, and he stands to lose much in the coming conflict. He has his store to protect, his ship to protect, and his wife, William Lee's sister, and their four children to protect. The last thing he wants is to find himself in the middle of the conflict. He is far from pleased to find that in addition to their regular cargo, they are carrying secret documents that can and will turn the very course of the coming war. James Spurr does a fantastic job of weaving fact and fiction together in this nautical adventure on the Great Lakes. A must read for anyone interested in American History. 290 pages.
