"all My Sons"
(Arthur Millar)
"All My Sons" of Arthur Millar is a beautifully constructed Greek type tragedy. But is prepared in modern setting. It is a realistic, thought-provoking plaly about the American middle class family life. Joe Keller, the protogonist of this play is an industrialist. Started in a small way, he has built up his engineering business in 40 years. He is toatally devoted to his wife Kate and the two sons Larry and Chris. Joe has got a Government Contraact for the manufacture of airplalne cylinder heads during war time. A batch of urgently neded cylinder heads develop cracks. Failure to develop the goods could mean loss of contracts. This will affect his business. So he instructed his men to deliver the goods. Soon the newspapers are full of the death-crashes of twenty one American pilots whose aircrafts were fitted with the defected cylinders. Steeve was joe's partner in the factory. There was a court case against the partners..Both were convicted. Joe evaed the responsibility and his partner Steeve go to jail instead. Ann Deever, Steeve's daughter was engaged to Larry Keller. Larry fought as a pilot in the war and was reported missing. Chris Keller proposed to marry Ann. he has become suspecious of his father's role in the killing of pilots. He revealed that Larry died in a suicide flight after hearing of the charge brought against his father. This made Joe admit his guilt and his willingness to confess. Chris here condemning not only his father but the short-sightedness of the typical American business man's creed. It is Larry's letter that finally shocks Joe. He understands that to Larry all the boys who crashed were his sons. Joe withdraws in to the house and shot himself and ends his life. His wfe Kate points out then despite tragedy life must continue. The dialogue is crisp and carefully written. I recommend my readers to read this beautiful play of Arthur Millar,
