Lady Of Horses
(Judith Tarr)
In this novel of pre-history, Judith Tarr tells the story of Sparrow. Born in a male dominated society, Sparrow is the ill-favored daughter of a shaman. Her mother had been a captive from the southlands and Sparrow was born with a foreigner's looks. Small and dark in a land of tall, fair people, Sparrow has never fit in and prefers to spend her time alone. Only the Grandmother ever seemed to care about Sparrow and on her deathbed she reveals a secret so great, that it has the potential change Sparrow and their society forever. After the Grandmother's death, Sparrow divides her time between serving her father's wives and more favored children, learning to hunt with her only two friends, Wolfcub and Keen, and spending time among the horse herds -- a strictly forbidden and dangerous pastime for a girl. As Sparrow enters womanhood, she begins to have the visions of a shaman, though a woman cannot be a shaman in her society and she is forced to share her visions with her cold, cruel shaman brother so that he can gain more power. So continues Sparrow's miserable life until one day a beautiful white mare calls to her from the royal herd and offers Sparrow the gift of riding upon her back. Sparrow accepts this gift though she knows it will mean her death if any of her people ever discover what she has done. It is not long before Sparrow recognizes the white mare for who she truly is -- Horse Goddess. Horse Goddess chooses Sparrow to initiate change to man's laws that will have Sparrow and her friends fleeing certain death only to find they all hold greater power than they knew. They must face war and death before they can change the world together.
