A Slight Return
(Alex O'Meara)
From the window of the shuttle, Logan Lee watched as the ugly grey shape of Omra base came into view. He was in the passenger compartment, sitting on the makeshift bed, leaning by his elbows on the viewport. ?Shuttle Juno to Omra base, requesting permission to land.? he heard the pilot, in the cockpit, speaking into the communications system. There was a pause, and then a static-filled voice replied. ?Shuttle Juno, this is Omra base. You have clearance to land in bay three-zero-niner.? ?This is Juno, acknowleged.? The comm clicked off, and the door between the cockpit and the passenger section slid open. ?We?ll be touching down in about ten minutes, Ensign Lee.? Logan turned to face Lieutenant Cocher. ?Thanks, Lieutenant.? Cocher, obviously noticing the tone of Logan?s voice, leant into the cockpit and hit the ?auto? button. The shuttle?s computer took control of the descent, and Cocher shut the door, walking over to where Logan was slouched. ?You want to talk about it?? Logan looked up, in surprise, then slumped again. ?Not really... but I guess it?ll pass the time.? Logan proceeded to tell Cocher everything. *** The wailing alarm sirens had startled Ensign Logan Lee out of his sleep. The calm, female computer voice broke through the screaming panic of the alarm. ?Attention. Attention. Containment leak in reactor seven-zero. Containment leak in reactor seven-zero. All technicians, please report to reactor seven-zero immediately.? As the voice had continued, Logan had heard the sound of running feet outside his door. He ran over to the wardrobe, and pulled on his work-clothes, tugged on his boots, and slammed his hand into the door switch. He emerged into the passageway to meet total chaos. A stream of people were running in all directions. He shut the door behind him, and ran towards the turbolift, his booted feet clanging on the metal floor. He skidded to a halt by the turbolift, and squeezed in just as the doors were closing. The time in the turbolift was only a few seconds, but it seemed to Logan that years were passing. The doors opened, and there was a mad rush as all the technicians in the lift poured out. All the service hatches into the reactor room were open, and the ladders were completely covered in people as technicians streamed into the room. The consoles were manned by technicians of all ranks, screaming information, orders and obscenities. ?Dammit!? Logan looked at the pulsing reactor, on the other side of the blast doors. It was throbbing with power, too much power. Suddenly the alarm changed pitch, and the voice of the computer sounded again. ?All personnel, evacuate reactor seven-zero. Critical meltdown in progress.? The flood of technicians suddenly changed direction, as steam began curling from the reactor. Logan skidded to a halt as one of the Senior Technicians, Lieutenant Commander Caltarn, threw a hand out to stop him.
