(Hanryk Ibsen)
Henrik Ibsen?s ?Wild Duck? is a realistic drama. It starts with a party at Mrs Berta Sorby?s. She is to merry Mr Werle, whose son has recently come back from the highlands, where he was a simple factory worker. He and his father sincerely hate each other, which is why the son moves in with his friend Hjalmar. He is a photographer and Gregers? father has helped him a lot in the past so Hjalmar feels like he owes a great debt to Werle. What de does not know is that his wife, Gina had a heated affair with Werle, while working for him as a chambermaid. Hjalmar and Gina have a 14 year old daughter, Hedvig who has a progressing eye disease. It is puzzling that Mr Werle, too has problems with his eyesight... Hjalmar too becomes suspicious about whether Hedvig really is his child. Torn by doubt he moves out, which will have tragic consequences for his family and his daughter in particular. All of a sudden Hedvig?s small safe world collapses. In a desperate attempt to bring her father back home she is ready to sacrifice her beloved duck, a present from Hjalmar?s father (Old Ekdal). The old man keeps lots of animals in the attic but the duck was a present from his servant, Pettersen so he has had a special affection for the bird. That is why he gave it to his granddaughter, and this is why Hedvig now feels that killing the animal that is so special for her should convince her father of her utter love. A tragic mistake during the offering leaves the girl dead...
