Windfalls

This novel follows two women through the emotional rise and fall that accompanies motherhood. Anna is a young grad student in photography when she first discovers she is pregnant. Cerise is not yet sixteen. Though the two young women don't know each other, they share in common the fear and regret that accompanies an unexpected pregnancy at a young age. But while Anna turns to anger and frustration as she tries to picture herself in the role of motherhood, Cerise comes to look forward to finally having someone in her life who is guaranteed to love her. In the years that follow, Anna struggles to come to terms with the difficult decision she made and Cerise builds a little paradise inhabited only by her and her daughter. But time changes everything and it isn't long before Anna is living the perfect life with her husband and daughter and Cerise is wondering when her perfect angel of a daughter was replaced by a rebellious, emotionally distraught teenager. After the birth of Anna's second child, tragedy meets Cerise's unstable little family unit and she finds herself adrift in a society that doesn't want to bother with her. Anna loves her children deeply, but is struggling to recapture the artist inside her. When the two women finally come face to face, they are immediately drawn to one another, without even knowing why. They look at each other and see only the differences, but their hearts speak the language of motherhood. It is impossible for them to part ways without first inexplicably changing one another for the better. They are able to send each other on the difficult journey to find something crucial that they lost along the way during the joy and devastation of being mothers.
