The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy
(Douglas Adams)
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a veritable feast of literary fun and frolics. From the very first page you are drawn into this allegorical world that quickly descends into a pantomimic storyline, introducing gross vogans, doubleheaded Zaphod Beeblebrox and the unforgettable Slartybartfast. Marvin's paranoid android is a recognisable friend next door that we have all encountered and remember with great fondness. First brought to us as a radio series, closely followed by a number of cassette recordings of the book, a television series, it eventually hit the 'big' screen with a woeful performance that in no way does justice to the wit and humour of the book. As part of a 'trilogy' of four, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wonderful introduction to science fiction as it should be - a little tongue in cheek, a little risque with people's sensibilities and a definitedig at the establishment, all hidden behind a wonderful mask of child like story telling that rolls amiably along, encouraging the reader to relax into the triviality of it all, until all of a sudden you realise that, actually, something rather serious is going on. For example, the link between a by-pass road construction on earth with hidden plans in the cellars of a far away council building resulting in the 'removal' of Arthur Dent's house and the inter galactic building of a super spaceship highway involving the destruction of Earth, with relevant plans being on display in a remote solar system (lazy humans not to have gone and looked at them !!). However, the ultimate accolade for Hitchhiker's is the introduction of the classic book 'Don't Panic' - a book to calm all nerves, soothe all troubled brows and somehow reassure all travellers throughout the universe. Well done, Douglas Adams - you will be sorely missed.
