(Kalu Singh)

Name any person in this whole world, who has never experienced the emotion of guilt. This unprecedented emotion can make an entry into our life any time, without a knock, leaving behind a feeling of remorse, shame, anxiety, melancholy and so on. The book ?Ideas in Psychoanalysis: Guilt? talks about the behavioral pattern of an individual encapsulated by this disturbing emotion, actions, a person can succumb to, when faced with incidents built out of the figment of his imagination and the source to deal with it.

This book makes an attempt to enlighten us with Sigmund Freud?s account with guilt and his analysis in tempering with the psychology of activities that an individual falls prey to, in order to satisfy the ?superego? which has an ambivalent relationship with ?guilt?.

Guilt basically arises out of Transgression, which means, going beyond the normal, which is socially or illegally unacceptable, accusation, blame, plea, apology, forgiveness, punishment, reparation. Sigmund Freud defines 4 activities as a normal course of action, and then tries to substantiate the inception of these activities to various forms of Guilt. The emotion of Guilt can be real, unreal, good and bad. A married couple not able to perform sex on their first night may predispose the bride to spill red ink on the bed cloth to hide her husband?s impotency forms a part of real guilt. An unreal guilt would be a man kicking a pebble on the middle of the road but after sometime picks up the pebble and keeps it on its original place. This innocent act was a feeling of revulsion, attempting to imagine that a Coach carrying his Fiancée may come in contact with the pebble, leading to the death of his fiancée.

The good and the bad guilt are the consequence of our actions which are antitheses to the moral values, issues and knowledge imparted to us by our forefathers and which form an integral part of the society. A woman menstruating may not go to the holy place as the religious doctrine suggest so and even if she does, the guilt of doing something against the moral system would be perennial. However, on the flip side, a woman may make an effort to go by setting up her own moral grounds. She would be reminded of the guilt but it would be good, as it does not let her down morally.

Many people, today, suffer from OBC: obsessive-compulsive disorder, which reflects the repetitive nature of doing things. This malady also arises out of guilt of high order. The sources to deal with guilt are medicines, if, it starts disturbing your normal routine. However, Guilt cannot be extricated from our life on a permanent basis. All that is required to control it are knowledge and practical analysis of our activities. For example, a pebble cannot turn a coach.
