World Famous Anecdotes

THE REQUIRED EQUIPMENT This story relates to the period when the great scientist, Einstein, left Germany. He got invitations from many universities to join them. He chose Princeton University for its intellectual and peaceful atmosphere. When Einstein reached Princeton, the administrative officer asked him regarding the equipment that he would require for his research. Einstein replied, ?I need only a blackboard, some chalks, paper and a few pencils.? That officer was surprised at the list of equipment required by the great genius. Before he could say anything, Einstein further added, ?Apart from these things, I shall need a big basket.? ?Why?? asked the perplexed officer. ?You see I shall be committing a lot of mistakes while doing calculations. The small baskets will get filled too often,? replied Einstein with a smile on his face. Beyond Earthly Desires Einstein was requested to accept the post of President of Israel after the death of Chaim Weizmann in 1952. Einstein politely rejected the offer and told the Israeli ambassador, Abba Eban, in a straight forward manner, ?I have a little knowledge about nature, but I hardly know anything about human beings. This kind offer from Israel has touched my heart, but at the same time made me sad and guilty, because I cannot accept it. Einstein further wrote in his letter, ?During my entire life, I have dealt with physical objects; I have neither the capacity nor any experience of dealing with human beings or attending to government work. These two reasons are sufficient to render me unsuitable for the high post offered to me. Then, I find that old age has also taken a toll of my physical capacity.? Einstein?s Implements Einstein had been invited to give a lecture at the Institute of Technology in California. Mrs. Einstein also accompanied him. The Einstein couple went to see the observatory situated at Mount Wilson. The biggest telescope of that time was in this observatory. The diameter of its mirror was 100 inches. Seeing such a large telescope, Mrs. Einstein asked the Head of the observatory, ?What use is this big telescope?? ?To understand and observe the formation of universe,? replied the Head. ?It is really surprising. My husband does all this work on used envelopes,? observed Mrs. Einstein. It was really a fact. In the study of his Berlin residence, there was a photo of Newton on the table as also a small binocular. Occasionally, Einstein?s visitors used to ask him about the binocular and its use. Einstein?s reply was, ?I do not see the stars with this binocular. The tenant who lived before me in this house left it here. Since then I have kept it here as a toy.? Some people used to enquire from Einstein about the equipment and the implements that he used in his research. He used to tap his head and smile. Once a visitor wanted to know about his laboratory and Einstein showed him his pen. This was his only equipment and the brain his laboratory. Bound to None Once a man asked Einstein if he was afraid of death? Einstein replied in his casual manner, ?I feel a bond that binds me to all living objects. This means that it does not matter at all, from which point a person starts and where he ends. There is nothing in this world that I cannot abjure at a moment?s notice.?
