The Quirks of Fate The life of Benjamin Franklin is a saga of achievements. His achievements in the fields of education, literature, publishing, business, administration and invention are without parallel. He was also exceedingly popular in national and international politics. One day, he was passing through a street, at that time he was in very distressing circumstances. His clothes were worn out. A beautiful girl saw him and smiled. Franklin said nothing, but could understand that the girl was laughing at his adverse circumstances. After wandering about he reached a printing press. A machine in that press was out of order. Franklin set it right and the owner was quite impressed by his capability. Franklin was employed in that printing establishment. The owner of the Press arranged for him to stay with an old woman as a paying guest. There he got a place to sleep and food. Incidentally, the beautiful girl who had once smiled at his poor attire also lived in that house. She was named Deborah Reid. When they saw each other they became enamoured of one another. Gradually this attraction turned into love and they became anxious for marriage. In the meantime, Franklin left for England as the Governor of his state assured him of a good job in that country. Hence their plans to marry remain unfulfilled. Benjamin Franklin could not secure any descent employment in England. He returned to Philadelphia in the hope that Deborah would be waiting for him. He thought that he would marry her and lead a happy life. He was heart-broken when he found that her family had got her married elsewhere. He continued living there in the hope that his fortune will take a turn for better and he would be able to marry his lady love. They got married after some time as Deborah?s husband went away somewhere and never returned. Franklin migrated to New York from Boston at the age of 17, because of his brother?s misbehavior. Then he left for Philadelphia for a job in printing press. His parents were naturally worried about him and requested him to come back. Benjamin wrote back a letter full of self-confidence, ?I am happy as am leading an independent life. If hard labour, thrift, avoidance of intoxicating drinks, honesty and perseverance are the steps to success, I shall definitely succeed in my attempts. You need not worry or feel despondent.? Franklin never went back. With the above qualities as assets he earned fame and his achievements are legion.
