Change
(Isaac Asimov)
Sir Isaac Asimov is a world maestro of Science facts & fiction. One single, fascinating aspect of Sir Asimov I have discovered & immensely fond of is his never to be missed introductions to innumerable books written by him on science facts & fiction. At this instant the pace of change in everything is taking place at super speed. In this book Change (written in the seventies) the incomparable Isaac Asimov has come out with more than seventy highly interesting essays. Do read them & enjoy. I have summarized a few of the essays here? Human spare parts: While cloning a body cell it is possible to block only those genes of the nucleus that will result in that cell to ultimately develop into a particular human organ i.e. heart, lung or kidney. Thus, immediately after a human being?s birth some bright cells can be removed to create human spare parts as future replacement for the same individual, as & when they fail. Imagine the human longevity if this really becomes practicable! Professions of the future: The rapid development in computerization will progressively remove mundane & routine activities that are quite uninteresting. It is possible that computers may takeover most of the human activities & that many humans will not have much of work. The scenario in the future may be one consisting of well to do people supported by the so-called ?slaves? in other words sophisticated machines or computers. There will be a broad array of liberal arts programs available & taught by computers. Some of the fascinating predictions of Dr. Asimov as to what kind of future professions are possible: Fusion Engineering, Computer technology (He has foreseen the future perfectly), Lunar mining or any other profession that places demand on human imagination & skill. Prevention of Earthquakes: Firstly, a simple explanation of how an earthquake happens? The Earth?s crust has a number of large plates that rub against each other as they move. The places where the plates meet are known as faults. When rocks on either side of these faults slide & slip against each other, pressure increases. When this pressure becomes high the fault gives, there is sudden movement & quake occurs. The intensity of the quake depends on how sudden & extensive is the movement. The possible solution in reducing the friction between the plates & preventing quakes: Deep wells can be drilled along the fault & water sent into them. Water will then find its way between the rocks, make them slippery, thereby precipitating a number of small quakes. This way according to Dr. Asimov the giant, killer quakes will never come. I am not sure whether this valuable method to prevent Earthquakes has been discussed at any forum. It will become very useful in earthquake prone areas of Planet Earth.
