"1,001 Nights Without Sex:the Curse Of The Single Girl"
(Suzanne;Schlosberg)
BOOK REVIEW: ?1,001 NIGHTS WITHOUT SEX:THE CURSE OF THE SINGLE GIRL? (SUZANNE SCHLOSBERG) ? LAURA CATION Being a single gal for almost 2 years has taught me that occasionally, society can make you feel you are incomplete without a man ? a message conveyed through advertising and life in general. Sometimes it feels like you are the only single woman on the planet! Highly unlikely, but recent events have made me feel this ? an old school friend?s wedding, offers to set me up with anyone from waiters to Big Issue vendors. Then I discovered Suzanne Schlosberg?s fantastic book ?1,001 Nights without Sex: The Curse of the Single Girl?. After devouring this book, I instantly felt better ? realising there were other single women out there! The book was written in a humorous, interesting style ? and the best thing was it contained so many experiences I could relate to. Just like Suzanne, I have also experienced the humiliation of the ?singles table? at a wedding ? and the constant inquisition from relatives about your marital status. I could also relate to her observations on how friendships changed when she remained single and her friends found a man. My school friend and I have grown apart over the years and this gulf is wider now she is engaged. Suzanne wrote about making small talk as you had nothing in common anymore and the friend always having to get ?pre-authorisation? before agreeing to meet. I wanted to find her in person within the pages and say, ?YES! I feel your pain!? It felt fantastic to share so many experiences with the Author such as internet dating and the constant urges to call your ex (despite knowing he was a waste of space). Her little tales of internet dates which rapidly turned into disappointments were funny and struck a chord with me. I have had some disastrous encounters myself! One of my favourites in the book was ?Philly?, who couldn?t fit in going to the gym because it would disrupt his routine ? consisting of going to/from work, cooking and doing laundry/ironing. 2 BOOK REVIEW ? LAURA CATION (CTD.) The book didn?t focus solely on the unintentional celibacy streak ? it was also about one woman?s long search to find her Mr Right. She eventually found her husband through internet dating. Suzanne?s book was a real inspiration ? and it helped knowing that she had shared the same experiences I had. Most importantly, I realised that if Suzanne had to wait that long for her Mr Right, then so could I.
