Essential Jung, The
(Anthony Storr (ed))
Carl Jung has been one of the greatest intellects in the field of psychology and its subfield psychoanalysis. Anthony Storr has done a service to the scholars as well as the ordinary layman by capturing the essential Jung by culling the latter's writings ánd presenting them in an evolutionary tragectory of thought. Jung's early works manifested the various subjects and topics that he was fascinated with. His apprenticeship with Sigmund Freud helped him sharpen his intellect and learn the fascinating world of the unconscious. But as the brilliant mind of Jung explored further and digressed into areas which were anathema for Freud, he had to break up with him and chart his own course. This enabled the world of psychology to gain priceless insights into the concepts of collective unconscious, archetypes and the idea that the unconscious is your ally, friend, benefactor and facilitator. There was more to the unconscious than mere sex, and sex still. The archetypes of anima, animus, persona, wise old man and shadow helped social scientists to gain significant insights into the dynamics of individuals as well as cultures. Jung further went to classify human beings into psychological types but he rightly focused more on how to facilitate a balanced individuation at the service of wholeness and integration. He also wrote on God and the problem of evil. The book ends with a take on man and his future. The book is indeed, a wealth of insights and resource for scholars as well as laypeople.
