The Rainmaker
(John Grisham)
Rudy Baylor is a young rookie lawyer who loses a prospective job offer and faces bankruptcy. He inadvertently takes up the case of Dot Black, who wishes to sue her insurance company. Her son Donny Ray Black is dying of leukemia; he could have been saved by a bone marrow transplant, but the insurance company refuses to cover the expenses. Thus begins a battle of the impoverished Blacks and their inexperienced lawyer versus the giant insurance firm and their ruthless team of skilled lawyers. But, surprisingly, Rudy foils every tactic of the opposition and really sticks it to them. Meanwhile, he also falls in love with a battered young girl, Kelly, and rescues her from her abusive husband. Grisham writes a funny, intriguing drama, packed with his trademark fantastic courtroom sequences. Rudy is really an endearing character, one with whom you can easily identify with. This is one of Grisham?s best books, definitely worth reading.
