Pride And Prejudice
(Jane Austin)
Jane Austin is quite clever with her writing, as it is well depicted in her novel ?Pride and Prejudice.? Two of the most diverse characters in the novel that are mentioned are Mr. and Mrs. Bennet. The couple seem to have very different views on parenting from one another. The objective goal of Mrs. Bennet is to see all five of her daughters well married off. The state of the family suggests that there is no heir to the family name, and that the girls would be bad off, if they were not married. She is determined they will be married before she passes on. She is, perhaps, the most irritating character in the book. Mr. Bennet?s parenting tactics are a bit more subdued. Yes, he does want to see his daughters married off. However, his goals are much different from that of Mrs. Bennet?s. Instead of just wanting to see his daughters rolling in fortune, he would rather have them be happy, as well. He therefore concedes to let Elizabeth off the hook from the awkward Mr. Collins. Mr. Bennet?s statement assures his daughter of his desires: ?An unhappy alternative is before you, Elizabeth. From this day you must be a stranger to one of your parents. Your mother will never see you again if you do not marry Mr. Collins, and I will never see you again if you do.? Because of this wise remark, Elizabeth was able to chose a husband of her own. Not only was she married, but she consequently was fortune was also in her favor. Mrs. Bennet would be wise to listen to Mr. Bennet?s advice. Then, perhaps her ?poor nerves? would not agitate her so!
