Charlie And The Chocolate Factory
(Roald Dahl)

Don?t be swayed by the first film made of this book ? the light and fluffy one. There?s little that?s light and fluffy about this book. Quite the opposite, in fact. It?s really quite dark and pretty scary ? but all in the best sort of a way! Typical of Dahl, here he has managed yet again to put in twists and turns and nasty surprises and enough revolting events which would appeal to even the nicest child. It?s perfect children?s humour. Does it have a message? No, not really. No directly, in any case. The story takes us on a journey with a rather-too-good-to-be-true little boy and his grandfather as they gain entry via a competition to one of the most famous chocolate factories ever. We meet Willy Wonka, the owner ? and here is where the whole tone of the book changes dramatically, reaching the downright sinister in places. We are quick to learn that Willy Wonka is not all he seems, with many hidden agendas and, delightfully for any parents, an intolerance of badly-behaved children. For the adults, this book can be a joy, as he deals with greed and gluttony and pretention and nastiness in a way that any parent could only dream about. Yet Dahl does not cross that line into ?teaching morals?. In his own inimitable way, the evil things that happen to the nasty children are kept very much under control ? sometimes humourous, oft times rather creepy and dark. The imaginary world the reader is drawn into is fascinating and fantastic and magical and very very real. Such is the style of this book. A true classic, a joy for children and a delight for adults.
