ABOUT THE AUTHOR (PAULO COELHO ) Paulo Coelho was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in August 1947. He attended law school there but abandoned his studies in 1970 to travel throughout Mexico, Peru, Bolivia and Chile, as well as Europe and North Africa. Two years later he returned to Brazil and began writing popular music lyrics. After a brief imprisonment in 1974 for alleged subversive activities against the Brazilian government, Coelho worked for five years for the recording departments of PolyGram and CBS. Between 1981 and 1986 he studied with the order of RAM, an ancient, religious Spanish society. Now a literary phenomenon, he has sold over 65 million books world-wide and has been translated into 60 languages. He has received numerous literary awards from a variety of countries and his books have become permanent fixtures on the bestseller lists of countries as diverse as Brazil, the UK, the USA, France, Italy, Germany and Greece. He and his wife Christina live in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. ABOUT THE INSTITUTE: The PAULO COELHO Institute is a non-profit-making institution financed exclusively by the author's royalties. The main idea is not to be a charity, but to give opportunities to the underprivileged and ostracized members of Brazilian society. Thus, the Institute concentrates its funds on: a) Children b) The elderly At present, the PAULO COELHO Institute provides financial support to certain underprivileged elderly people, and is co-sponsor of the Creche Escola Meninos da Luz project, Lars Paulo de Torso (in the Pavão-Pavãozinho favela, Rio de Janeiro), which looks after 270 children. NEW SITE OF PAULO COELHO?S Paulo Coelho?s Fan-Club site has changed its face; it?s now more colorful, cheerful, interactive and positive, as is the writer and his fans. Paulo Coelho's life is a story about the dream of becoming an author, a dream that came true. Today he is recognized by the public, and his work touches people?s lives, making each reader understand that there are obstacles along the road, but also hope. He represents the Brazilian image around the world and is a phenomenon of the world literature, deserving all the affection, love, respect and dedication of his readers and his Fan-Club.
