James And The Giant Peach

Roald Dahl is I think, one of the greatest writers of fantastical stories. His book 'James and the Giant Peach' is an inspired tale, a Cinderella story for boys, (but it works just as well for girls). The characters are marvellous and no description is really needed for aunt Spiker and aunt Sponge, their clever names almost do that for you. It is that kind of touch that sets Dahl above other writer's and his descriptive language is totally unique and recognizable to him.
Roald Dahl also inspired my brother to read. My brother had dyslexia as a child, and found reading and writing extremely difficult, but whenever he was read a story by Roald, he would be drawn into a world of wonder filled with amazing characters and adventures. James and the Giant Peach was one such adventure which had us both enthralled from beginning to end. Every child should get the chance to read a Roald Dahl book.
It starts with James being cruelly treated by the aforesaid Spiker and Sponge who are self obsessed, and see James as a mere servant to attend to their many selfish needs. His parents were eaten it seems, by an escaped rhinoceros from London zoo, which leaves him in this cruel predicament. It looks as if James is destined for a life of misery, when out of nowhere a man appears with a bag of magic glowing crocodile tongues, and then his adventure begins....
The story is really enjoyable, the characters are all well described, so that you can build them up in your own imagination, the adventure in the book is exciting and captivating for children, teaching them that cruelty and spitefulness doesn't win the day, that the true value of friendship is priceless and to follow their dreams.
Dahl never fails in his unique writing style, and remains popular to this day. There is a website for anyone that is interested, it is www.roalddahl.com, it is a very good site, and very enjoyable to use. Even if you are an adult you can still enjoy Roald's work. All in all he was a very clever and inspirational wordsmith.
