Rapids
(Tim Parks)

Publicidade
Parks is never less than entertaining, and Rapids displays again the flawless comic timing, accurate ear for the demotic and psychological insight of earlier works, such as the Booker- shortlisted ?Europa?. Accompanied by his teenage daughter, Louise, Vince Marshall joins a group of fellow Britons on a canoeing trip in the Italian Alps, hoping to distract himself from his wife Gloria?s death. Also with a hidden agenda are Clive and Michaela, the ill-assorted couple organising the expedition, who are both veterans of anti-globalisation demonstrations. As the novel opens, their relationship has hit a crisis.
Further complicating matters are the personal dilemmas that each member of the group must confront. For some, it is a simple matter of deciding between two potential suitors; for others, the fear of being made to look a fool; or of failure.
White-water canoeing has never been so thrillingly evoked.
Unfurling against these sharply described action sequences in a gentler tale of love lost and found. Funny, touching and thought- provoking, this novel has something for everybody- from romantics to addicts of dangerous sports.
