The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy
(Douglas Adams)
IT?S NOT THE STORY: IT?S THE HUMOR The Hitchhiker?s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams isn?t about the storyline. The storyline doesn?t make a lot of sense anyway. It?s about the humor. My son bought me the hard back copy as a present. He bought one for his brother. He bought one for himself. And we have shared innumerable moments laughing and sharing the wit of this book. In it?s absurdity Hitchhiker?s Guide is filled with English humor. And no one can quite grab the moment like the English. Their humor overstates the obvious and leaves one open jawed and begging for more. It begins with Arthur Dent?s house being demolished. Arthur hasn?t yet registered the event in his mind that it is HIS house that the council wants to replace with a bypass. As Arthur awakens and is adjusting the bathroom mirror which is pointed upward, he sees the reflection of a bulldozer. ?The word bulldozer wandered through his mind for a moment in search of something to connect with.? Adams might have said, ?It didn?t register with Dent when he glanced into the mirror and saw a large yellow bulldozer.? But that?s not funny. The first sentence is. The book is full of one liners. It?s about humor. It?s about wording and timing. It?s not about the story.. The story is little more than a bad My Favorite Martian Meets Independence Day. Singularly it?s already been done. Together it hasn?t but that?s irrelevant too. ?Charming man?? he said. ?I wish I had a daughter so I could forbid her to marry one.? The book is written in short chapters. It?s a good book to pick up and read if you have only a few spare minutes sort of like a Reader?s Digest with a sense of humor.
