Shameless
(Frank c.Jodouin)
Shameless is a an autobiographical account of one man's experience iin Vancouver's downtown eastside. Canada's infamous skidrow, where drugs and crime are standard fare. It is home to a depraved subculture that is misunderstood and ever expanding. Shameless exposes the inner workings of the madness that exists in what is supposed to be a civilized society. It reads like a high energy crime novel, at tinmes allowing us to forget that the gritty narrative is in fact a true story. The main character (Prince) is a homeless drug addict who survives by stealing the contents from parked cars, he is a normal person in almost every respect, he differs from the society's norm in that he is plagued by the ravages of drug adiction. In fact the manner and stoism with which he handles his terrible woes give him a heroic allure that might well be misconstrued as a man who glorifies the ravages of street life. the fact of the matter is that Prince simply makes the very best of what is otherwise a bad situation. So well in fact that he finds himself unable tro get back to normal and life as he once knew it. While he is a corrupt and confused individual he is a charcter that is easily indentified with and we find ourselves rooting for the anti hero with fervor. Shameless is a read that keeps the reader fully invested and turning pages. It is also a warning that a so called civillized society would do well to heed for it is truth plain an simple.
