Pride And Prejudice
(Jane Austen)
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin was first published in 1813 and has been considered one of her best novels. The plot is simple and one that people of any age or historical time can relate to- a lovers tryst. Set in Victorian England, with its class consciousness and values and morals, this novel explores the romance between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. We are shown more of the character and thoughts of Elizabeth, and therefore, sympathise more with her. Elizabeth Bennet, the protagonist, is the perfect Austen heroine and one of the most well-known female characters in English literature. She is intelligent, generous, sensible- and human. She judges Mr. Darcy quickly and harshly when he haughtily refuses to dance with her, she sees him as arrogant and obnoxious. In a novel defined by dialogue, she converses as brilliantly as any other character. Her honesty, and lively wit enable her to rise above bad behaviour and rude remarks that pervade her class-bound and often spiteful society. Nevertheless, her sharp tongue and tendency to make hasty judgments often lead her astray. Mr. Darcy's character tends to change, not by his speech or concerns, but more by his actions. We realise that he is in love with Elizabeth and proposes to her, only to have her reject him. Even so, when he realises that her sister's virtue is in danger with a soldier, he quickly pays for a dowry for her so that the Bennet's reputation is still upheld. Two threads of love run through the novel- the second is the affair of Jane, the eldest sister, with Mr. Bingley, Mr. Darcy?s friend. This courtship occupies a central place in the novel. Yet these characters are not as rounded out as Elizabeth?s and Darcy's. Austin has used the contrast of their romance with that of Darcy and Elizabeth. She shows a more fireside romance in this relationship, perhaps saying that this is a more uninteresting love, compared to the relationship of Darcy and Elizabeth. The novel is a juicy piece of fiction with numerous twists, turns and obstacles in the plot that need to be overcome. Elizabeth must not only cope with her family and the fact that she is on a lower social rung of the ladder than Darcy, but she must also overcome her own mistaken impressions of Darcy, which initially lead her to reject his proposals of marriage. Her charms are sufficient to keep him interested, fortunately, while she navigates familial and social turmoil. She gradually comes to recognize the nobility of Darcy?s character, as does the reader, and the reader begins to realise that they are truly meant for each other. She realises the error of her initial prejudice against him and decides to marry him in the end. We see in Pride and Prejudice, a deep and understanding portrayal of human nature that makes this book and its characters resound within us. No matter how far Elizabeth is pushed and taunted, she will not compromise or give up on her family and in the end, she gets married to the man she has realised she loves.
