Deception Point
(Dan Brown)
Introduction Dan Brown is an international celebrity now after the brilliant success of Da Vinci Code. I myself loved the book, and since then I have checked out some of his other books like Angels and Demons and Digital Fortress. I found that they were all similar books, so I was hoping for a bit more of variety in Deception Point The Plot President Zachary Herney is facing stiff competition in his re-run for America's top job from Senator Sedgewick Sexton. Sexton is particularly harsh on Zachary's spending on NASA's researches and bases his campaign on redirecting this money on more social issues like education rather than space research. Just when Senator Sexton's rating is at all time high, NASA makes the greatest discovery of them all - The discovery of aliens. Knowing that this discovery coming at a rather opportune moment for his campaign and the number of eyebrows it might raise, President Zachary decides to take a measure approach in this matter. He hires a few public scientists who are non-NASA to verify these facts and then goes out to the public with the discovery. Overnight the ratings are reversed, but then when the race is for America's top job, everything is fair!! Sexton's daughter, one of the public to verify the discovery, suspects some foul play somewhere. There begins the unravelling of one of the biggest hoaxes that were nearly pulled off. Check out this thriller from Dan Brown for all the details. Critic's Viewpoint The topic selected by Dan Brown is quite an interesting one given the rumours going around the internet claiming NASA's mission to moon was a fake. So Dan gets inspired from this claim and concotes a tale of how NASA can frame such a hoax. One thing about any of Dan's book is the fast pace. Once you pick one up you just cannot put it down till you reach the end of the roller coaster ride. But, once you have experienced a couple of his books, you can more or less predict some of the aspects of his plot. For example the similaritys of Deception Point with other Dan novels are as follows: 1) Starts with a bizarre murder of a character whose murder would be stringed into the story somewhere at the climax. 2) Involves experts being called in to investigate some bizarre event. 3) Someone on the inside is actually on the outside meaning some insider backstabs big time. 4) The unsuspecting experts somehow manage to hoodwink their chasers and emerge successfully. The last point is exaggerated to the limit in Deception Point especially when you have scientists taking on the Delta Force killers and making them look like fools. To Dan's favour the scientists were at their home stretch and were more accustomed to the surrounding than the Delta force, but then you are talking about the best force that US has to offer and if they are as bad as in this book, then the world need not fear the US!! Another thing which I love about Dan's book is the characterizations. The characters usually have a nice depth, the same is true in this as well. The characters of Rachel Sexton, Michael Tolland, Zachary Herney and Senator Sexton have been well etched out. All in all this comes out as another exciting thriller from the stable of Dan, but unfortunately the variety I was looking is still lacking. I just hope that in his next venture, Dan shows us some more variety. Chief Characters in the book Rachel Sexton An intelligence analyst working for the National Reconnaissance Office. Daughter of Sedgewick Sexton. Michael Tolland Oceanographer and highly credible public figure as a producer of documentary films. Zachary Herney President of the United States who is running for a second term and proclaims that he would not use any underhanded tactics to win office a second time. Senator Sedgewick Sexton United States Senator running for President. Father of Rachel Sexton. Highly ambitious and unscrupulous politician. Lawrence Ekstrom Under fire NASA administrator desperately in nemiraculous scientific discovery. William Pickering Director of the National Reconnaissance Office. Rachel's mentor. Marjorie Tench Senior advisor to Zach Herney. The brain behind Zach's campaign. Gabrielle Ashe Personal aide to Sedgewick Sexton. The brain behind Sexton's anti-NASA campaign. Summary Another fast paced, thrilling novel from Dan Brown. Although the novel is pretty similar to his other novels, it still is a good thriller and a good read. I would rate this Dan Brown offering with 4 stars. Dan's other novels Da Vinci Code: Join symbologist Robert Langdon in a chase for the Holy Grail.
