Pride And Prejudice
(Jane Austen)

Publicidade
At the heart of this book lies the story of Lord of Pemberley, Fitzwilliam Darcy, who discovers that, much to his reluctance, he is falling in love with country girl Elizabeth Bennet, despite her lack of wealth or connections. Elizabeth on the other hand despises his pride and is determined to spurn him. The author weaves their love story between sub plots and characters set in 18th century England, delighting the reader with her subtle wit and skilful introspection.

This book is not just a period piece, though the atmosphere created by the author invites you to let your imagination loose, into the times of corsets, summery frocks, balls, mansions and the like. Nor is it merely a classic love story with that hackneyed yet eternally popular ?rich man meets poor girl, falls in love? storyline . The author builds up tension leading up to the final denouement very well, leaving the reader in all eagerness to know whether the protagonists will in fact ? live happily ever after?

What really sets this book apart however is the masterful characterisation by Ms Austen, and her witty and sometimes satirical take on 18th century England. Through each of her characters, the author comments on the narrowness and rigidity of the society of those times, and the means chosen by her characters to deal with these that affect their ultimate destiny. The wilful and independent minded Elizabeth, the absurd Mr Collins, the cynical Charlotte, are all characters strongly etched, and remain with you long after you?ve put the book down.

For those whose first ( and I suspect last) exposure to this classic was the ham handed, romance novellish movie release a couple of months ago, and those who have not as yet been exposed to Jane Austen, I recommend a read. Not a substitute for a magazine or an inflight movie, this one needs to be read at ones leisure, preferably every night before falling asleep, or over a long weekend.
