El Justicio
(Otakar Batlicka)
Otakar Batlicka was going to make most of his visit to Santa Clara to ask all sorts of people all details regarding El Justicio. Already far away in Panama he heard many a story about El Justicio. He anticipated that people?s imagination and fantasy fabled this man a lot. Otakar sought accommodation in the family of his acquitance and the first day he asked the oldest family member ? the guest?s father whether he knows anything about El Justicio. Of course one talks about him far away behind the frontiers. The guest?s father can remember, that only the word El Justicio evoked terror. Yes, El Justicio lived. He saw him once himself with his very own eyes. It was during some holiday in a local pub. He appeared in the middle of the best entertainment; he was dressed in a black coat that judges wear with black silk scarf over his face. Nobody moved, not even a finger. El Justicio walked calmly to one of the tables and grabbed one local public notary by his shirt collar. The notary was an adventurer and not honourable man who robbed many honest people of their belongings and estates. El Justicio then lead the startled notary out of the pub ? he was found later by the town all beaten up. That was the way El Justicio punished. And do you know, what the name of this mysterious avenger means? El Justicio ? The Rightful. You must not forget that forty years ago everyone wanted to make his own laws, which suited him. And in the worst time El Justicio appeared. He was making order in the country and he knew how to do it. He partly destroyed gunmen, gamblers and loafers and partly thrashed them out of the region. He took poor and hard-working people under his protection against thiefs and a lot of witnesses live here in Santa Clara who could tell you a lot about El Justicio. When the situation calmed down some years later, El Justicio disappeared in the same mysterious way as he appeared. Nobody knows who he was, what was his name, where he came from or where he disappeared. Otakar was so absorbed in the story telling of the old man that he decided to find out all that would be possible about the mysterious avenger and protector of law. One of the persons Otakar visited referred him to go and see the local saddler, apparently the oldest man in the whole region, some Sir Domingo. The old saddler had his old house with a shop and a workhouse on the edge of the town. Otakar entered his house. The man who was sitting down repairing a saddle greeted Otakar and got up. Despite his age he was of a straight, sturdy figure. Briefly Otakar explained to the saddler that he would like to find out details about the life and acts of El Justicio. The old man shook his head and listened without interruption. Sit down, I do not know much but what I know I am going to tell you. Otakar prepared quickly his notebook and a pencil so that he could note down some interesting things. He offered the old man a cigar that he lighted with pleasure and started to narrate. El Justicio was settling his account with those, who destroyed his father. Then a few individuals were ruling in the region who were buying all land far and wide. Anyone who did not want to sell his piece of land at a pre-set price was destroyed. The local notary, put up by conspired farmers, also provoked an argument about land with Perez, the father of El Justicio. Naturally Perez lost his case and according to the verdict had to leave the region. At that time Perez?s son finished his studies in Mexico city and became a lawyer. Old Perez was complaining to his son in a letter and asked him to come to help him to justice. The young Perez arrived straight away ? but late! His father was already buried. He fell down with a treacherous shot. Afterhe arrived at the deserted house he was given charger of calibre 24 found with the unhappy father. Full of anger young Perez made an oath. I shall wear this charger, the only trace of my father?s murdered all my life. Woe till I meet him one day! After that Perez wore the brass charger on a golden string round his neck. He stayed several days on the deserted farm but then one day he disappeared and it was, the later ? El Justicio!? The old man stopped talking and looked thoughtfully somewhere in the distance. Suddenly Otakar?s sight slipped on the chest of the old saddler. A small brass charger slipped out of his half opened shirt, today the no longer used charger of calibre 24. In front of Otakar sat ? El Justicio. Otakar then kept his mouth shut for twenty years.
