Sexuality is in the air more than ever before, and if you avoid breathing it, you asphyxiate to death. Conversely, there is so much sex in the world around us that we choke on the same. There is either an undervaluing or an overvaluing of sexuality so much so the balance ? or shall I say, the soul of sex - is missing.

Pathway to Authentic Intimacy? by Ferder and Heagle from Ave Maria Press/ St Pauls comes as a act of loving kindness to adolescents, young adults, parents and teachers who long to have a mature perspective on sexuality for their own lives, and to pass on the same to the next generation. The book guides the reader through an understanding of sexuality as a sacrament (for those who are religiously minded) and authentic means to mature intimacy, and places it in the context of healthy human development.
Perhaps one drawback, if we can call so, is the absence of the physiological analysis of sexuality, its anatomy. However, given the fact that there are scores of books which analyze the physicality, and that the knowledge of the physical dimensions neither necessarily helps us improve the act (haven?t we mastered the physical art of it already, thanks to the likes of Kamasutra?) nor guarantees a sense of fulfillment, perhaps it was a wise and deliberate miss. The very focus of the book is to educate the reader on the psycho-socio-spiritual realms of sexuality, and the authors have superbly achieved their goal. Interestingly, they have presented their thoughts along the Ericksonian stages of human development, hinting at sexuality as an integral part of our lives from the pre-natal life to the ripe old age where, a right understanding and a soulful practice of the same in the yester years, can lead us to wisdom and integrity. The book will indeed leave the reader a finer human being with an integrated approach to the mysteries of one?s life.
