The bitter August wind of Bournemouth, paying homage to a heavy leaden sky, where seagulls were blown around like drunken sailors, heralded in the usual unhealthy, doleful, miseries suffered by the Durrell family; each one of them sporting their own unique dose of the winter blues.
For Gerald lying on the floor, minding his own business and sorting his shell collection, it had bought the awful catarrh, causing him to fell like his head was full of cement and forcing him to breathe through his mouth, much like one of his beloved animals.
The only one in the family, left unscathed by a dose of the doldrums was Larry, the eldest, who was suitably annoyed with the fact that his home looked like a hospital, with the most irritating patients as inhabitants.
Larry the little blond culprit, who planted the seeds of discord in the family?s mind and sat back and watched them germinate, with absolute devilish glee, later claiming to have had no part at all in the upsets.
His first victim was Mother, with her nose stuck firmly in a massive tome entitled Easy Recipes from Rajputana, who he berated mercilessly, for being the guilty one and allowing her family to suffer the indignities of the inclement weather and badgered her into taking her long suffering brood of chicks and flying like migratory birds, to sunnier skies.
So, they sold their home and took the very barest of essentials, their personal belongings proving to be a great source of entertainment to the customs officials.
After a long, tedious, journey they arrived at the Greek Island of Corfu, a sun-drench paradise that became home to the Durrell family and their various two legged and four legged hangers-on, who became part of their close-knit family and proved to be the start of Gerald?s love for all creatures big and small.
