Yevgeniy Ivanovich Nosov (b. 1925), novelist. Born on January 1 in the village of Tolmachev near the city of Kursk, into a family of a third-generation artisan, a blacksmith. Starvation during childhood taught him to earn a living by selling what he got from fishing, hunting and herb-picking. He completed 8 grades of school before the war. The civil war found him, a 16-year old young man, in his home village that later had to survive the fascist occupation. After witnessing the Battle of Kursk (5 July ? 23 August 1943), Nosov went to the front, joining the artillery. In 1945, he was wounded near Kongisberg and celebrated May 9th, 1945 in a hospital in Serpuhov, which he will write about later in a story ?The red wine of victory?. After release from the hospital, he received a disability pension. He continued his studies by finishing high school after the war. The love and talent for drawing that he had since childhood leads him to go to Central Asia to work as an artist, illustrator and literary contributor. He starts to write prose. In 1958, his first story book ?On a fisherman?s path? comes out. In 1961, he returns to Kursk, where he becomes a professional writer. He attends postsecondary literary courses in the M. Gorkov Literary Institute. Upon their completion in 1972 he continues his self-education. ?Thirty grains? (1961), ?The house behind the triumphal arch? (1963), ?Where the sun awakens? (1965) were all printed in this time. The writings of E. Nosov are printed in such magazines as: The New World, Our Contemporary, The Spark, taking their proper place amidst Russian literature. His story? The Helmet Bearers of Usviaty? (1980) was very successful; in 1986, a collection of stories comes out under the same name; a book of sketches ?I?ll come out on a remote station? comes out the same year; in 1989 ? a book of stories for young school children ? Where the sun awakens?; in 1990 ? a story book ?In the clean fields?; in 1992 ? a book of stories for high school kids ?The red wine of victory?. E. Nosov lives and works in Kursk.
