Agatha Christie was born 15 September,1890 into a well-to-do family in Torquay, a beach resort on the west coast of England. Her parents had one other daughter and a son. As a grown woman, she never tired of saying what a happy childhood she had led. She grew up in a large home with extensive gardens, and passed her time telling herself stories. She enjoyed a very close loving relationship with her mother. Her mother insisted that she be educated at home, and she was 15 years old when she began to attend a boarding school in Paris.
She met her first husband Archibald Christie at a ball. They married in 1914. During the first World War (1914-1918) she worked as a volunteer nurse and assistant in a chemist s shop. It was at this time she learned much about drugs and poisons, knowledge which she would use in her mystery writing. Her daughter Rosalie was born in 1919. At this time she also began her writing career.
In 1926 she earned fame with the publication of The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. Nevertheless this was to be an unhappy time in her life: her husband Archibald fell in love with another woman, and asked for a divorce. Agatha then disappeared for eleven days. The whole country was mobilised in a search for her, and she was finally found in a hotel in Harrowgate, not knowing how she had gotten there as she had lost her memory. She began medical treatment. In 1928 her marriage ended in divorce.
In 1928 during a visit to an archaeological excavation site in the Ur she met Max Mallowan, who was 14 years her junior. They married that same year. The Levant (the Near East) had been of interest to Christie for some time, and she always accompanied her husband there on excavations and actively played a part in them.
In 1973 Agatha Christie suffered a stroke and ended her writing activities. On 12 January 1976 she died while suffering from a cold.
