The Feast Of All Saints
(Anne Rice)
In this atmospheric and graphic dark southern gothic novel, the reader journeys to a time that unsettles and educates. Historically poignant and dramatic to extremes, the wealthy and affluent famile' gens de colour live work and die side by side the white race. Slavery, disease and scandal are ripe in 1900?s New Orleans, giving ground to this compelling and controversial piece of literature. Historical facts thread through this fictional work highlighting black inventors, revolutionaries and war.The women in the free quadroon society often succumbed to an old but salacious tradition to survive. The Quadroon Balls were a place to turn out the loveliest of the mocha late? women in silks and ribbons. These women or les sirens met the rich and powerful elite of the white southern communities and entered into relations. The women would depend on their white protector to provide all of the comforts a women needs. The children were illegitimate, and the mothers often hoped to ?pass? the children off as white to send them abroad to live normal lives away from the ugliness of slavery. Our main character Marcel St Marie begins his journey through this rugged muddy town with all of the trappings of a rich young man but none of the privilege. Marcel rebels against his mother who is the recipient of a white protector?s monies and love. Marcel questions the logic of the quadroon people of freedom enslaving the Africans and becomes frustrated, morose and wild. Our characters exhibit a strong desire to belong, while trying to understand their African and white mixed blood. With her usual style and flair, Anne Rice brings these characters to life in vivid detail, and exquisite form. She once again educates entertains and brings fiery life to her writing. I recommend this book to history buffs and romance lovers alike.
