Love Story
(Erich Segal)
Love Story One thing that avid readers are going to agree upon is the sheer supremacy of the very highly respected novelist and academician, Erich Segal, when it comes to dealing with a story involving deep human emotions. There is none more adept at such incisive understanding and portrayal of feelings that are deeply embedded in the human mind and heart. It requires something extra and this extra Mr. Segal has in such abundance that in his case it is not an ?extra?, rather ?natural?, being gifted with it, and to great extent having honed his skills to the highest of degrees. People might think that instead of writing straightaway the extract of the novel, ?Love Story?, why I am going ga ga over his understanding of human feelings. But then it is essential because it is this attribute of his, which has helped him to churn out such moving and believable literary endeavors. One really ends up wistfully, wishing to be a part of that story. A story, that doesn?t remain one. Rather takes the proportions of reality. My feelings for the said book, was of utter disbelief, in the beginning. Thereof some sense started taking shape. I say sense, because, I really went numb after I finished the book. Causative therapy followed. The consequence being my decision to try and write the abstract of this beautifully conceived and wondrously presented book. The one thing that I do remember, during the process of my reading is I started reading the book and the next thing I knew, I had finished the book! Though in between, the portrayal did move me to tears which had gone unnoticed in the frenzy of this optical assimilation of the written voices. Optical assimilation, which got transmitted very fast, to my mind and heart. Thanks to my sensory and motor nerves! But then, was I reading through my mind?s eye? If at all that is possible. The book has a quality akin to power point presentation in computers. I say so, because the characters and their introduction in the beginning is just like snap shots which one looks at by flipping the pages of an album. The book begins on a flippant note and gosh, was it misleading, if one considers the body and the ending of the story. They couldn?t have been more juxtaposed. Thus goes the saying ?morning shows the day? for a toss! The main characters of the story, Oliver and Jennifer meet in the most innocuous of circumstances and at the outset everything they say to each other, could have one and only one outcome that is, going their separate ways. But life has its way of defying things that are apparent and logical to the conclusion! They end up as one, their lives being entwined in a story of love. Better still a saga of love, comprised of understanding and sacrifice, the latter taking the shape of spontaneous action, not remaining a sacrifice. To term it so would be to belittle the person and the involved sentiments, because love is a commitment based on integrity. Integrity of thoughts as well as actions. The only tragic thing is that this saga couldn?t reach its potential destination and distance. Once again the tyrannical paradox of life taking the proportion of larger than life. Thus Jennifer having given up her career and Oliver having severed his connection with his rich (would be saying the least!) father, when are finally at a point where now they can enjoy life to totality, having traversed the path of hardship to the severest of extents, find that they have come to a dead end as far as their life together is concerned. Jennifer diagnosed to be terminally ill. Then comes the pain of trying to keep the truth from her. Oliver bears that burden but finally Jennifer breaches through the defenses of Oliver, extracting out the painful fact. Even in this moment of agony they draw solace in the fact that they are now sharing this undeniable fact that their days together are numbered, not keeping the truth from each other. As hiding something from the person you love the most, is very painful and if it happens to involve that particular person, then??? Irony of this whole portion of Jennifer?s illness is that Oliver once again goes to his father. He had left him for her, though she had many a times asked him to reconcile stating that parents are like that, though their actual mental state is like a coconut. Hard exterior, soft interior. But then, Oliver didn?t pay any heed, only to find himself doing just that in her moment of counted days on earth, though this time she doesn?t know about it. Oliver had gone to his father to ask for loan to help him in furthering Jennifer the best of painless treatments, but refrains from mentioning the actual cause; which his father extends. And then destiny. Jennifer bids adieu, in Oliver?s arms. And when he comes out to face the shattered life of his, he finds his father standing there. Another irony. Oliver, who had never cried in his father?s arm, having been always at arms length from him, finds himself doing just that! Thus one is forced to think that, did Jennifer die an untimely death, just to break the unseen fence between father-son duo, dispelling all misunderstanding between them?
