The Antipope
(Robert Rankin)
A stranger has appeared on the streets of Brentford; a charismatic leader who seduces the ladies of the parish and leads them into the devastating practice of worship. But all is not as innocent as it might at first seem. The venerable Professor Slocombe is very concerned. How did this new preacher gain power so quickly? Why did the cowboy builders abandon the orthodox Catholic Church and actually do some work? What impact does this have on philandering Irishman John Omally? And what does all this have to do with fifteenth century pope Alexander VI? Norman Hartnell ?not to be confused with the other Norman Hartnell- is planning to wade across the Channel, much to the amusement of his lady wife and her reporter lover. Archroy?s wife swapped his Morris Minor for five magic beans and he believing ?quite rightly- that she is having it away with John Omally takes up the deadly art of Dimac. Neville the part time barman at the Flying Swan is fending off the unwanted modernizations of the brewery. Soap Distant is tunneling under the borough to prove his theory of under land dwellers. And Jim Pooley, unemployed bachelor of the parish is filling in the hours between betting shop and opening time with the challenge of being an unlikely hero. Marvel as the plucky Brentonians battle the forces of evil, stave off disaster and still have time for a couple of pints of Large.
