The Da Vinci Code
(Dan Brown)

Publicidade
?The Da Vinci Code? by Dan Brown is a good read. This is probably why it has considerably helped its author reach an estimated annual income of $76.5 million. Some book, you might say. Some book, indeed, so let?s take a closer look at this work of fiction and why I see it on the bookcases in the most unlikely of homes. The theory behind the novel is based on another book, ?The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail? by Baigent and Leigh (you might just have heard about the court case), which suggests that Jesus married Mary Magdelene and had a child together, and that bloodline has continued to this day. It also suggests other rather shocking ideas connected to the Bible and Christianity. This could be one of the reasons why this book has sold 25 million hardback copies worldwide. It?s the controversy. Anything that rocks the long held beliefs of Christianity, as this book does then it?s going to be a bestseller. Another reason could be Gossip. Society of any sort loves it. If I told you that the son of God slept with a prostitute, and then made her his wife, that?s gossip. Then, of course there is the subject matter: The Holy Grail. How long has this mystery enthralled? How many centuries has it caught people?s imagination? Need I say more? Then take the characters. We have a down to earth, uncomplicated American hero who seems to have been in the wrong place at the wrong time. The heroine is a sexy, clever, independent woman that rescues our down on his luck hero. She has a loving family. Personal tragedy is with her, of course, but at a comfortable distance. A sexual undercurrent is ever-threatening to surface between these two characters. The ?will they, won?t they?? factor has always helped sell a book well. We also have a stereotypical French Cop called Captain Bezu Fache who seems to appear a direct threat to our hero?s welfare but in the end is just being French. There is a stereotypical English eccentric millionaire, with a manservant, who luckily for our hero lives in France, not far away from where the action begins. Lastly, an albino who just happens to be a murderous religious fanatic stalks the pages. The setting of the novel helps sell. The action takes place in Europe. This in its very self establishes an acceptable and romantic air to the text. We also have Knights, secret societies of which famous people throughout history belonged, and women?s rights. The novel is a thriller and it works very well as such, although, on many occasion, it leads you into a safe place then turns the light out. But, the fact is that you are in a safe place already, so with a little thought you could easily work out either where the door is or where the light switch is located. Thus, this is a book that makes you want to turn the page, even if it is to see if you are right about the plot, which you are inevitably are. It is easy to read, provides you with interesting facts and does overcomplicate the plot or the various twists. It also makes you want to buy Baigent and Leigh?s reference book. A fact which, it seems they have not realised. In conclusion, my wife bought this book at a charity/thrift shop because she didn?t want to pay full price for it. I can understand this but I?m glad she did buy it, because I enjoyed it very much. But, like ?The Beatles?, I think it?s over-rated.
