White Fire

The only child of rich parents, Rana was pampered and cherished like every spoiled child of her kind. During all her life, she?d been protected and sheltered between her mother arms.
Unfortunately, if we grow brooded in that way, all the affection given to us rather tends to express itself under obscure aspects very often translated by some awkward excesses. That is which one calls commonly: « mother domination ».
Rana always obeyed her mother, even too much; at the point that she submissively got engaged to Boyd Dexter, a distinguished gentleman with a noble character whom the mom has carefully and judiciously chosen for her as being the ideal husband belonging to the same social sphere and venerating the same morality and the same suitability as she does.
Moreover, it had never occurred to her to ask questions about anything. Whatever the mother, immensely authoritative, decided for her, Rana had to accept it and conform with.
It was thus, perhaps, with stubbornness and in a spirit of rebellion against her life of eternal protected daughter that Rana fell madly in love with Heath Markland, a bantering fellow as bad as there can be.
But was the mother right after all?
And was her attitude towards Heath justified?
Did she know something about this one that her daughter was unaware of?
This very white fire detects for our increasing curiosity, through such exciting and thorny plot, the passionately secret complexity of the feeling in love mixed with joy, sadness, innocence, mischievousness, flesh pleasure and betrayed hopes. It exposes to us, with talent and using a highly British style, the game, sometimes ridiculous and foolish, of the affection that is cultivated, under its four moods, in the hollow of a pretty white hand.
It is this same white fire that burns in the eye of each one of us in order to keep us alive just the moment to whisper a little ? I love you ?.
