Ragtime
(Doctorov, E.l)

Publicidade
An american history. It flows from the beginning of the 20th century until the first world war and follows a new age family that symbolizes an American at a junction in time, marching towards her destiny. Around her, some illustrated personalities like the magician Houdini or the industrialist Ford. The novel plays the rythm of ragtime, slow and powerful at the beginning, and starts to run and flow without faltering until its final, with its catalyzing element a black man: Colehouse Walker. He is the angular rock that directly and indirectly propels the family to encounter events of America in the midst of change: one of ragtime, of the beginning of theatre, of black suffering, of syndicates, and of anarchy. The person who is Colehouse Walker affects change in each member of this family and amplifies the latent themes in the whole family circle like the progressive distance between fiancees, emancipation and the rejection of one of its members - the step-brother in this case. It is not useful to overlook the details in this book. It just calls to appreciate a chronic family struggling to succeed in its historical context.
