The Penguin Atlas Of World History
(Hermann Kinder & Werner Hilgemann)

Publicidade
Originally written in 1964 and translated into English in 1974, the Penguin Atlas of World History is an excellent survey of important historical events, empires and socio-cultural phenomena that have occurred all over the globe since the earliest times. This book is a significant achievement that is loaded with precise details, complex maps and enough dates to satisfy the most traditional of historians. It is a volume which will be of invaluable assistance, however you like you history; the sort of reference to which you can return constantly and each time you will discover something novel. Kinder and Hilgemann have set themselves the monumental task of synthesizing the world's history into about three hundred pages and have largely succeeded. Admittedly, the font is rather small, but this at least means that the book itself is conveniently compact and easily accessible.

The authors adopt an interesting approach to outlining global history. In the first instance, prehistory and early history are under the microscope. They then proceed to an intricate examination of ancient Greece and Rome. After this point the history of nation-state and cultural developments is dealt with by utilizing the term 'age' - there is the Early Middle Ages, the High Middle Ages, the Late Middle Ages, the Age of Transition, the Age of Religious Discord and the Age of Reason. Perhaps curiously, Kinder and Hilgemann have chosen not to canvas the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Nevertheless, their study of world history up until the late eighteenth century is a must read (or a must reference) for anyone either passionate or even remotely interested in history in a general sense. This is a work of considerable sophistication conveyed in an urbane, measured manner that is comprehendable both for the historian and the layperson. Full credit goes to Hermann Kinder and Werner Hilgemann for their efforts in compiling this impressive historical work.
