Skipping Christmas
(John Grisham)

Publicidade
Blair Krank, daughter of Luther and Nora, has decided to dedicate two years of her life to the Peace Corps, and is flying off to eastern Peru to teach English to primitive little children.

It?s the first time in her life that she won?t be spending Christmas at home with her parents, so, as a result, Luther and Nora decide not to celebrate Christmas this year. There won?t be any gifts, no Christmas tree, no giving to charity, no Frosty on the roof of the house, and no traditional Christmas eve party at their house (to the disapproval of their neighbours).

Going through the cost of Christmas the previous year, Luther (who is an accountant) realises that they spent $6,100 and is not happy about it. The next day, he goes into the travel agents at his workplace and picks up a brochure for a cruise, then sets about plotting how to convince Nora that they should go. He succeeds, so they decide to book the trip, and will be leaving on Christmas Day. Until then, they will have to resist any temptation to get into the Christmas spirit, which proves a lot harder than they thought.

After weeks of dodging the Christmas rush, trying hard not to get into the spirit, and being kept sane by the thought of their cruise, the Kranks have to change their plans, because their daughter, Blair, is coming home - with her fiancé, and expects to celebrate Christmas.

Now, at the last minute, they have to prepare for Christmas and forget about their cruise. Christmas trees, gifts, Frosty on the roof, Christmas cards, and celebrations are back as top priority. Blair returns home with her Peruvian fiancé and the Kranks throw their traditional Christmas eve party, to the delight of the neighbours.

The End.
