Is Google Abandoning Its Do-No-Evil Promise?I Along with their capitulation to censoring content in China about Tibet, this news about Google catering to the whims of Hollywood, again at the expense of users, could be one of the reasons their stock price has dropped 25 percent in the past few weeks. Google Video, one of the Internet giant's newest ventures, is a search and sales tool in which users can download videos uploaded by creators and entities that own the rights to them. The problem stems from Google Video's Web store that sells and delivers programs in a format devised by the company -- a digital rights management system -- that locks the video you purchase to the sole computer you purchase it on and the specific software you use to play it, much like the way Apple operates to control those same rights with its inferior iPod and iTunes. Moreover, the player must communicate with Google before it will allow a video to be played. If communications get scrambled, as computer networks often are, you won't be able to play the video at all. In this scenario, it's clear to me nobody wins. Could this be the first of many Faustian compromises Google makes to keep big business interests happy at the expense of its consumers-come-first mantra? Let's hope not...
