How To Kill A Mockingbird
(Harper Lee)

To read ?To Kill a Mockingbird? is a trip down memory lane. It brings back memories of one?s childhood. The book explores a typical South American countryside town through the innocent and inquisitive eyes of a child. It also captures the mundane as well as shocking events in the children?s neighborhood that go a long way in shaping an individual?s attitudes and opinions.

Scout and Jem are motherless children growing up in a conservative South American county. Their father is a conscientious man who believes in walking his talk. He possesses a rare integrity and the conviction to follow the dictates of his conscience. It is these qualities of his that the children unconsciously absorb. His abhorrence for senseless violence despite being an ace shooter, his courage to fight for a Negro despite himself being a white man, his compassion for people in pain, his transparent ways with his children ? all speak of a man of great strength of character.

All this is neatly woven amidst the children?s childhood exploits. Their adventures are numerous. Together with their other companion, they try to unravel the mystery of Boo Radley, their low-profile neighbor. At school, they learn the prejudices harbored for different segments of society.

To Kill a Mockingbird is an easy-paced, Pulitzer prize winning book that makes a telling comment on a society that is deeply rooted in prejudices, yet also has its humane side. The beauty of the book lies in the way these points are subtly presented to the reader through the innocent eyes of a child.

In the South America of the early 20th century, it was considered a sin to kill a mockingbird. The book?s title is a metaphor of the sins that inevitably prevail any human settlement.
